In early 1847, forty South Carolina volunteers aboard a riverboat heading for Mobile mutinied. “With fixed bayonets, they stopped the boat and went ashore,” having endured two days below deck without food, according to the American historian Ernest Lander. “No one would obey the officers’ orders to arrest the mutineers; hence the officers yielded and hushed up the affair.”
