Other studies have directly tested punishment in chimpanzees. Whilethere is evidence that chimpanzees will punish a thief who stole foodfrom him (Jensen . 2007), currently there are onlynegative findings on the issue of third party punishment (Jensen . 2007; Riedl . 2010); in an experimental setting,even mothers will not retaliate against an individual who steals foodfrom their offspring. However, since some field researchers reportincidents of third party punishment in the wild, further research isrequired.
