The SREB comprises a series of roads and railways along the route of the historical Silk Road to Europe via Central Asia, while the maritime route passes through scores of ports that are owned or have been invested in by China. Originating from ports like Guangzhou on China’s eastern seaboard southwards to Singapore, it then sails north towards the southern Asian ports of Chittagong and Colombo, crossing the Indian Ocean via the Maldives and Seychelles to the eastern African ports of Mombasa and Mogadishu, before passing through the Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean, finally docking in Venice. Both aim to create a cohesive economic area through trade and investment.
